The mayor of Siero, Ángel García, and the councilor for Urban Planning, Javier Rodríguez Morán, have announced that the multinational Costco registered this Friday at the City Council the application for a license to establish itself in the industrial estate of Bobes.
According to the mayor, the project is planned on a plot of almost 55,000 square meters, where a store of about 15,000 square meters of surface area, a service station, 825 parking spaces, and around 5,000 square meters of green areas will be built, in which more than 100 trees will be planted.
The estimated investment for the commercial establishment exceeds 25 million euros and, including the development of the surrounding area and the purchase of the land, the total investment will be around 37 million euros. In addition, the company has already paid the ICIO which, along with the associated fee, will generate for the municipal coffers revenues exceeding 668,000 euros. The municipal forecast is that, once the business is fully established, 200 jobs will be reached.
García has emphasized that "this is excellent news" and has recalled that they have been working on this initiative for almost five years. He pointed out that the turning point was the declaration of the project as a Project of Regional Strategic Interest (PIER) by the Government of the Principality of Asturias, which allowed securing its viability. He also highlighted that the submission of the license application by Costco constitutes a new key and practically definitive advance for the establishment.
Regarding the administrative procedure, the mayor has indicated that at the beginning of next week, the Urban Planning technicians are expected to send the corresponding report to the Environment department. In parallel, the mandatory report will be requested from the Ministry of Defense, given that the plot is located within the influence area of the Cabo Noval barracks.
The City Council is considering the period between the end of January and February 2027 as a horizon to grant the license. For its part, Costco intends to start the works as soon as it has all the permits, with an estimated execution period of twelve months.
To conclude, the mayor has highlighted the impact that this investment will have in Siero, both for the 200 jobs that are expected and for the additional income that it will bring to the municipal budget, something that, he has pointed out, allows the council to continue increasing its budget, its economic activity, and its population.
