The tax reduction on gasoline and diesel will continue in November with an intensity equivalent to 20 cents per liter. The definitive data for September, published this Wednesday, October 14, confirms that the condition set to maintain the tax relief on both fuels is met.
The measure is included in the Royal Decree-Law 25/2026, of September 29. The initial calendar contemplated reducing its intensity after October, but included a mechanism to maintain it if fuels remained sufficiently expensive.
What data maintains the reduction of fuels
The condition is linked to the year-on-year increase in the price of each fuel: the mechanism is activated when the corresponding index for September exceeds that of September 2025 by more than 15%.
Therefore, the general CPI of 4.9% is not the threshold that activates the measure. It is necessary to distinguish the index of the overall consumption basket from the specific indicators of gasoline and diesel.
How much it represents in a tank of 40, 50, or 60 liters
The equivalence of the announced reduction is calculated by multiplying the liters refueled by 0.20 euros.
| Liters refueled | Equivalence of 20 cents per liter | Equivalence of 13 cents per liter |
|---|---|---|
| 40 liters | 8 euros | 5.20 euros |
| 50 liters | 10 euros | 6.50 euros |
| 60 liters | 12 euros | 7.80 euros |
(Own elaboration. These are arithmetic equivalences of the announced reduction, not a comparison between actual gas station prices)
In a 50-liter tank, maintaining the 20 cents instead of dropping to 13 represents 3.50 euros additional equivalent tax relief per refueling.
Why the pump price may continue to rise
The measure acts on the taxation of fuel. The consumer does not have to request aid to benefit from this lower tax burden.
This does not guarantee that the price drops by 20 cents compared to the previous day. The pump price also includes other components of the price. If these increase, they can absorb part of the effect of the tax reduction.
To compare the actual expenditure, it is necessary to multiply the liters by the final announced price. For example, 50 liters at 1.80 euros cost 90 euros; at 1.90 euros, 95 euros. These are illustrative prices, not daily quotes.
What may happen in December
The mechanism maintains a reduction equivalent to 13 cents in December due to the increase recorded in September. It can reach 20 cents again if the index corresponding to October meets the legal condition.
The data for October will, therefore, be the next element to watch to know the definitive intensity of the reduction of each fuel in December.
