At the end of 2025, 44.3% of residents in Spain —around 21.8 million people— had a funeral insurance, according to figures collected by the employers' association Unespa, which places this type of policy among the insurance products with the highest penetration in the country.
By territories, the penetration of this coverage shows very marked differences. Cádiz stands out as the leading province, with 75.6% of its inhabitants having funeral coverage. Following are Ávila (72.6%), Ciudad Real (72%), and Badajoz (70.2%).
On the opposite side are Teruel (20%), Soria (20.3%), and Balearic Islands (21%), the areas where funeral insurance has the least presence. Nevertheless, protection reaches one in five residents in these provinces.
The report highlights a "solid footprint" both in large cities and in rural areas. The contracting remains at relevant levels regardless of the size of the municipality, moving steadily between 37% and 44% of the population.
In this sector, it is common for the same policy to cover several generations of a family. This feature explains why insurance rates are high across all age groups.
"While it is true that people over 50 years old have the highest ratios (close to 50% or higher), among young people it is common to see equally significant coverage rates," the report attests. In quantitative terms, among those under 35 years old, protection is between 30% and 40%.
The analysis by household type shows that the highest levels of insurance are observed in homes where a couple without minor children lives and at least one of its members is over 65 years old (56.7%). Contracting is also notable among households formed by a single elderly person (52.4%). In contrast, the lowest levels are found in homes where a single person under 30 years old resides.
TWO OUT OF THREE DEATHS IN 2025
Regarding benefits, the essential mission of funeral insurance is to cover the expenses and organization of the insured's funeral. However, many entities include additional coverages in their policies, such as psychological support services, legal advice, or the management of closing the digital life.
During the last year, the companies specialized in deaths handled almost 294,000 burials. That is to say, two out of every three deaths registered in Spain, 65.4%, were backed by this type of insurance.
