The regional secretary of Institutional Policy and Territorial Cohesion of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Gil, has highlighted the role of the Cofrentes nuclear power plant for the security of energy supply in Spain and as a "technological benchmark and economic engine of the territory".
As the Generalitat has conveyed in an official statement, Carlos Gil has emphasized that Cofrentes constitutes a "strategic asset" for the Valencian Community, being an "absolute guarantee of supply and a first-class technological benchmark".
In this context, he has insisted that the energy transition and territorial development "must serve so that our young people find opportunities here, in their land, so that they do not have to leave. We need our technicians, specialized Vocational Training professionals, and universities to contribute to the territory," he stressed.
Therefore, the regional secretary has maintained that "the best possible path is public-private collaboration and the coordinated involvement of all institutions: the Generalitat, the Provincial Council, and the City Council."
Gil spoke at a strategic institutional meeting where the Strategic Plan promoted by the Cofrentes City Council was presented, conceived as a "key tool" for the economic and territorial development of the municipality and the region. The regional secretary of Employment and general director of Labora, Antonio Galván, also attended this meeting.
Since 2023, the Cofrentes City Council has been promoting a strategic planning process in anticipation of the possible closure of the nuclear power plant, a scenario that requires defining "new economic and employment alternatives for the territory".
These types of processes, which are led by the business sector in close collaboration with public administrations, are infrequent in inland municipalities, which gives "special relevance" to the initiative underway.
In parallel, the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan (PSTD) is serving to lay the foundations for the future tourism model of the municipality and the region, consolidating itself as a strategic instrument of great interest for the entire territory.
