Podemos has chosen Micaela Jiménez as the head of the list for the Congress of Deputies for Málaga for the general elections on the upcoming November 29. The party bets on a social worker specialized in gender and equality policies, linked to the feminist movement and to the platforms that defend the right to housing in the province.
The candidate has claimed the need to build a left with political autonomy from the PSOE, capable of promoting reforms in housing, feminism, and public services. "We need a brave left that does not settle for managing what exists and dares to change things", Jiménez pointed out after her appointment was announced.
Who is Micaela Jiménez, Podemos candidate for Málaga
Micaela Jiménez has a degree in Social Work, is an expert in Social and Family Education, and holds a master's degree in Gender and Equal Opportunities Policies. Throughout her professional career, she has worked in non-governmental organizations, public administrations, and non-profit entities, especially with women with addiction problems, minors in vulnerable situations, and people at risk of social exclusion.
Her experience also includes participation in equality projects and workshops for the prevention of gender violence, as well as her involvement in feminist organizations and citizen participation spaces. She has also been part of the Board of Directors of the Professional College of Social Work of Málaga, where she held the Gender Vocal position, and has collaborated with the neighborhood movement and associations of parents and students.
Currently, the candidate participates in social movements for the right to housing in Málaga, where she collaborates in actions to delay or stop evictions and accompanies families threatened with losing their homes. Her activity also extends to initiatives against gentrification and the organization of neighborhood responses to housing access problems.
Jiménez also participates in pacifist movements, solidarity initiatives with the Palestinian people, and anti-racist collectives. She is also part of the project of the self-managed sociocultural center La Nave, a space for community organization in Málaga.
Housing and feminism, priorities of Podemos in Málaga
The candidacy of Micaela Jiménez will have among its main political axes the defense of access to housing, equality between women and men, and the strengthening of public services. The head of the list considers it necessary to adopt measures that go beyond the recognition of social problems and that allow intervention on their causes.
"We cannot normalize that there are families living with the anguish of losing their home while housing becomes a business for a few", the candidate has stated, who demands actions against real estate speculation and the processes that expel residents from their neighborhoods.
In terms of equality, Jiménez has defended the need to promote policies that combat male violence and the inequalities that affect women. "Feminism cannot remain in words or gestures. We need policies that change women's lives," she has pointed out.
Podemos claims an independent left from the PSOE
The candidate for Congress from Málaga has also defended that Podemos must run in the general elections with its own political project, without being subordinated to the Socialist Party or renouncing its proposals to reach agreements with other forces.
"People need a left that dares to go further, not a political force that settles for following the PSOE or that renounces defending its own proposals", Jiménez has assured, who considers it essential to maintain a differentiated voice within the political space situated to the left of the socialists.
Her designation occurs in a context of electoral division between Podemos and Frente Amplio, which will run separately for Congress in different constituencies in the general elections on November 29.
With Micaela Jiménez at the head of the candidacy for Málaga, Podemos seeks to bring to Congress the demands of social groups linked to housing, feminism, and the defense of social rights. The party has not yet communicated the rest of the names or the complete order of its list for the province.
