The president of the Govern, Marga Prohens, has come out in defense of the rental assistance system promoted by her Executive in the Balearic Islands, marking distances with the measures applied during the eight years of government of the Pacte. "Yes, we defend tenants more and better than the left," she has stated.
Prohens expressed this on Tuesday in the plenary session of the Parliament, in response to a question from the Unidas Podemos deputy, José María García, about her policy of support for people living in rental housing.
The head of the regional Executive highlighted the expansion of tax deductions for tenants that was approved at the beginning of the legislature, raising the amount from 440 euros to up to 550 euros. As she explained, thanks to this "improvement" and the "elimination of requirements," the assistance has gone from benefiting 7,000 tenants at a cost of three million euros to reaching 26,000 tenants, with a projected budget of 14.6 million in 2025.
"We have 251% more beneficiaries than you and we allocate 375% more budget to help tenants. So yes, we treat tenants 375% better than you did," Prohens emphasized in the regional Chamber.
The president also highlighted the deductions aimed at incentivizing property owners to freeze rents, as well as the reduction of the payment period for rental assistance, which, she assured, has gone from two years to one. "Yes, we defend tenants more and better than the left," she insisted.
In her speech, Prohens accused the Unidas Podemos deputy of trying to "turn tenants against property owners" and of endorsing the occupation of homes.
"We defend small property owners, tenants, and private property. And let it be clear, you defend the criminals," the president concluded.
For his part, García reproached the Govern for, in his opinion, siding with landlords and not with tenants. "We believe that you do not treat people who live in rental housing well," he stated, while maintaining that rental prices are now rising much more sharply than when the Pacte was in power.
