The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) again positions itself as the most voted force in the elections of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with a backing of 37% of the votes. In parallel, in the city-state of Berlin, the formation of The Left leads the count with 24.5% support, according to the poll released by the German public television ARD.
In the capital, The Left practically doubles the result obtained in the 2023 elections and surpasses the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which until now governed in coalition with the historic German Social Democratic Party (SPD). The latter falls to fifth place with 12% of the votes, behind AfD, which would be in third place with 16%, and the Greens, who would be fourth with 15%.
The CDU cedes 8.2 percentage points compared to the previous electoral event, while the SPD loses 6.4 points. The Greens decline by 3.4 points and AfD experiences an increase of 6.9 points. On the threshold of the 5% necessary to enter the regional parliament is the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW, 5%), while the Free Democratic Party (FPD) remains at 2.5% of the votes.
The candidate of The Left, Elif Eralp, has reiterated one of the main promises of her campaign: access to affordable housing. "From today we are going to change Berlin together," she emphasized when evaluating the first data.
The result of AfD in Berlin is the best in its history in the city and coincides with a rise in electoral participation, which at 4:00 PM reached 58.5%, well above the 48.8% recorded in 2023.
Victory of AfD in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, AfD achieves a 20-point advance to 37%, positioning itself slightly ahead of the SPD of the regional president, Manuela Schwesig, who totals 35.5% of ballots, which is 4.1 points less than in 2021.
Far behind appears The Left, the third force with 7.5% support, 2.4 points less than in the previous call. The Greens would obtain 5.5%, 0.8 points below, while the CDU also remains at 5.5%, after losing 7.8 points. BSW again hovers around the access threshold with 5%.
AfD has celebrated the "sensational result" in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in the words of its co-leader Tino Chrupalla, who claims they have "clearly a mandate to govern" and has expressed his willingness to "dialogue with all parties."
In contrast, the SPD has not yet reacted to this forecast which, if confirmed, would imply that the Social Democrats would cease to be the leading force in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for the first time in the last 28 years. The CDU, for its part, faces what could become the worst electoral results in its history in this federal state.
The regional elections this Sunday are attracting unusually high attention following the political earthquake represented by the clear victory of Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the elections in Saxony-Anhalt.
In Berlin, 2.5 million citizens called to the polls are electing the parliament of the city-state, while in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, 1.3 million people are summoned.
The outcome of the day will also have a national reading, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU facing strong criticism. The latest survey from Infratest for ARD indicates that only 10% of the German population trusts the situation in the country, compared to 90% who rate the management of the federal government negatively.
