The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, has had contact this Thursday with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, to review the latest progress in the ongoing negotiations with the United States after the signing of the preliminary agreement in mid-June.

The highest official of Iranian diplomacy explained on his social networks that he had a telephone conversation with the Portuguese diplomat, who for now has not offered his own version of the call.

According to Araqchi, the exchange focused on "the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, the implementation process" of the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran to end hostilities in the region, as well as "the latest progress related to the negotiations," after delegations from both countries held separate meetings this week with Qatar and Pakistan in Doha.

In parallel, this same Thursday Guterres has positively valued the "resumption of dialogue" between Washington and Tehran and has urged both parties to "maintain their commitment to move forward" in the implementation of the 14 points included in said memorandum, as indicated by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, at a press conference.

In a similar vein, UN Under-Secretary-General Elizabeth Spehar has spoken during a Security Council session, where she praised "the joint decision to reduce tensions and act with restraint," something that, she stressed, "offers some hope that dialogue and diplomacy can regain momentum."

However, Spehar also recalled the recent exchange of attacks over the weekend, which "serve as a stark reminder of the fragility of the current situation and the serious risks of further escalation," at a meeting convened at the request of Bahrain after it was targeted by attacks attributed to Iran.
