Spain's next match: date, time, and opponent in the World Cup

Spain's next match in the 2026 World Cup will be on Thursday, July 2nd at 9:00 PM, Spanish peninsular time. Luis de la Fuente's team will play their first knockout match in Los Angeles, already in the round of 16.

The opponent is not yet decided. They will come from Group J and will be either Austria or Algeria, who are competing for second place in a direct duel. Austria has the advantage to maintain that position; Algeria needs to win to change the matchup.

Spain reaches this round as the leader of Group H. They did so after beating Uruguay 0-1 in Guadalajara, with a goal from Álex Baena before halftime, and closing out a group stage of less brilliance than control: a draw against Cape Verde, a clear victory against Saudi Arabia, and a minimal win against Uruguay, who ended up eliminated.

Spain will play in Los Angeles on July 2nd

The match will be played at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, one of the major venues for the 2026 World Cup. For the Spanish audience, the schedule is good: Thursday, 9:00 PM, right in the prime time for television and digital consumption.

The first consequence of finishing first is clear. Spain avoids Argentina in the round of 16. The official FIFA bracket already showed that path: the first in Group H faces the second in Group J, while the second in Group H was exposed to the leader of that group. After Cape Verde's qualification, it will be the African team that faces Argentina.

Spain will have five days to prepare for the match. It's a short window, but enough to recover legs after a match against Uruguay with a lot of friction, little clean play, and high wear and tear. De la Fuente arrives with one certainty: the team has competed even when they haven't found continuity with the ball.

Austria or Algeria, the first obstacle

Austria and Algeria are very different opponents. Austria offers order, pressure, and European experience. Algeria has a more emotional profile, with players capable of breaking games open and a clear need to win to be second.

For Spain, the risk lies in managing favoritism. The World Cup has already provided enough warnings: Cape Verde advanced with three draws, Uruguay left without a win, and the 48-team format allows for less predictable matchups.
