The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil has called this Friday to consultations the chargé d'affaires of Argentina, María Emilia Cortés, in order for her to offer explanations about the recent departure of the former candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, who left the region bound for the United States together with his family after taking off from Argentine territory.
In Brasília, Cortés has been received by the head of the Mercosur Department, João Marcelo Galvão de Queiroz, who has demanded details from her about Bolsonaro’s departure, over whom a Supreme Court order weighed for him to hand over his passport while he is the subject of an investigation for an alleged money laundering offense linked to betting houses.
According to sources from Itamaraty --name by which the Brazilian Foreign Ministry is known--, Cortés has communicated that she will relay to the Argentine Government the content of the conversation, which lasted only a few minutes, according to several Brazilian media outlets.
Flávio Bolsonaro arrived this Wednesday at a Miami airport in a private jet in which he was traveling with his family, after taking off from Puerto Iguazú, in the Argentine province of Misiones, and making an intermediate stop in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
The immigration authorities of Argentina have indicated that Bolsonaro and his companions crossed the border on Tuesday night, presenting documentation in order and with no legal restriction existing that would prevent their entry into the country.
After midnight had already passed, they boarded a private flight operated by an Argentine company and, avoiding Brazilian airspace, headed to Guayaquil, from where they departed to the United States in less than an hour.
Once on U.S. territory, Bolsonaro has released a letter in which he proclaims himself "leader" of Brazil and refuses to recognize the result of his electoral defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. His escape has been harshly questioned by a large part of his own allies and by other sectors of the Brazilian right.
