The president of Brazil and candidate for re-election in the second round of the presidential elections this Sunday, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has reiterated that his opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, is a "liar".

"We are competing with a citizen called lie," Lula declared after casting his vote at his polling station in San Bernardo do Campo, in the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo. "He is not capable of telling a single truth at any moment (...). That is why I believe that the people will not choose a liar," he added.

"We hope to win the elections," indicated the leader of the Workers' Party (PT), on the left, also emphasizing the intense mobilization of his supporters during the campaign.

Lula went to the voting center carrying a Brazilian flag and again lashed out at Bolsonaro, whom he described as a "militiaman," a "morally, ethically, personally disqualified person." "It is impressive the ability he has to lie. He has been educated to tell the most grotesque lies. I am convinced that the Brazilian people will never allow a militiaman to occupy the Palace of Planalto," he argued.

The leftist candidate has shown the national flag and denounced that his opponents "campaign with this and want to govern with the American flag."

Lula exercised his right to vote accompanied by the first lady, Rosângela da Silva, the vice president, Geraldo Alckmin, and former ministers Marina Silva and Simone Tebet.

This Sunday, 158 million Brazilians are called to the polls to choose between Lula and Bolsonaro in the presidential runoff. The latest polls released on Saturday by Quaest or Datafolha indicate a slight advantage for Bolsonaro (51-49%), which in statistical terms means a technical tie as the difference falls within the margin of error. In 2022, Lula won with 50.9% of the votes against 49.1% for Jair Bolsonaro.
