The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has demanded that the ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, leave her position after several alleged scandals related to supposed negligence in the performance of her duties have come to light, facts that have prompted the opening of an investigation by the Office of the Inspector General.

"We have asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team and we wish her the best," confirmed this Tuesday the new White House spokesperson, Katie Zacharia.

Trump had already hinted on Monday that he was considering firing Guilfoyle, who is accused of having accepted expensive gifts while serving as a diplomatic representative and of soliciting money in exchange for facilitating access to high-ranking government officials before her official appointment was formalized.

Guilfoyle's lawyers have rejected the allegations regarding the supposed request for funds and maintain that the information disseminated about her official trips does not correspond to reality. They insist that their client has always complied with federal requirements regarding travel declarations and gift registrations.

According to sources close to the investigation cited by CNN, the clarifications provided have not convinced the Office of the Inspector General, the supervisory body in charge of the case, which has led to the formal opening of inquiries into the diplomat's actions.

Within hours of Guilfoyle's stepping aside becoming public, Trump has distanced himself from her in statements to the press (the ambassador was once engaged to his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.): "Kimberly Guilfoyle was not part of my family. I suppose she dated my son a long time ago. In any case, I didn't like what I was reading," he stated to the media in front of the White House, before departing for Alaska to hold a new rally in the midst of the campaign for the legislative elections on November 3.
