King Felipe VI has held this Thursday a meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, at the Palacio de La Zarzuela, as the Royal Household has announced.

In the audience, both have discussed the contribution of the Ibero-American Summit to promoting political dialogue and international cooperation, as well as reviewing the situation in the Middle East and in Ukraine.

During the conversation, the Portuguese diplomat conveyed his deep gratitude and recognition for Spain’s firm commitment to actions Unidas and multilateralism.

The meeting, in which the Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, was also present, takes place in the context of the XXX Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, which is being held in Madrid on 4 and 5 November under the slogan "Iberoamérica. Juntos construimos nuestra Comunidad. Juntos la proyectamos hacia el futuro y hacia el mundo".

The Ibero-American Summits are political forums in which the Heads of State and Government of the 22 Ibero-American countries promote an agenda of shared interests.

The 2026 meeting will be the fourth Ibero-American Summit organized by Spain, after those held in Madrid (1992), Salamanca (2005) and Cádiz (2012). Spain assumed the Pro Tempore Secretariat of the Community of Ibero-American Nations (SPT) at the Cuenca Summit (Ecuador) in 2024.

The meeting this Thursday is also considered one of the last meetings between Felipe VI and Guterres, given that the latter will leave his position as Secretary-General of the United Nations on 31 December next.
