The Israeli Armed Forces have reported the launch of projectiles from Iranian territory against the State of Israel, in what is interpreted as a response to the bombing carried out on Sunday by the Israeli Army on neighborhoods in southern Beirut, the capital of Lebanon.
Official Iranian media have indicated that "about four" projectiles would have impacted Israeli territory, specifically in the north of the country, according to alerts issued by the Israeli authorities.
"The IDF --Israel Defense Forces-- have identified the launch of projectiles from Iran towards the territory of the State of Israel. Defense systems are activated to intercept the threat," the Army stated in a statement.
The Israeli Army's Home Front Command has issued emergency warnings that have been sent to the mobile phones of residents in potentially affected areas, according to the military note.
"The population has been asked to be responsible and act according to instructions. They save lives. You must enter the protection areas after receiving the warning and stay there until further notice," the message sent to citizens reads.
The statement clarifies that these shelters can only be left "after receiving explicit instructions" to do so. "You must continue to act according to the instructions of the Home Front Command," the official warning concludes.
After the attack became known, the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, shared an image on social media showing the flags of Iran and Lebanon together, in a gesture of support for Beirut and its allies in the region.
At the same time, Israel's Minister of Public Security and leader of the far-right party Jewish Power, Itamar Ben Gvir, has called for a forceful military response in a brief message on social media. "Today Tehran must burn!" he stated.
Israel had assured the Lebanese government that it would not attack Hezbollah's stronghold in southern Beirut, but it has finally launched missiles against alleged headquarters of the Shiite militias in the Dahiye area, after denouncing that they had carried out attacks against Israeli territory during the morning. According to the official Lebanese agency NNA, at least two dead and 20 injured have been counted so far.
Iran, Hezbollah's main ally, has made the signing of any peace agreement with the United States conditional on the end of the offensive in Lebanon. Israel, for its part, has intensified its military presence in the south of the neighboring country in recent weeks, an operation that the Israeli Army itself describes as a consolidation of its security zone along the northern border.
