The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, is scheduled to travel to Iran on Monday, October 19, for an official visit focused on the crisis unleashed in the Middle East following the surprise offensive launched at the end of February by the United States and Israel against the Asian country.
The spokesperson for the Ministry, Maria Zajarova, detailed in an appearance before the media that Lavrov "will hold talks" with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi, as part of his "working visit to Tehran," as reported by the Russian news agency TASS.
According to Zajarova, "a detailed discussion is planned on international and regional issues, with a focus on the situation surrounding Iran and the steps that Russia is taking to reduce tensions." The meeting will serve to review the diplomatic landscape and the initiatives that Moscow is promoting to de-escalate the situation.
In parallel, negotiations between the United States and Iran, in which Pakistan acts as a mediator, have been blocked for weeks, with no tangible progress towards a peace agreement. At the same time, the ceasefire reached in April remains in effect, although it has been marred by various exchanges of attacks since then, without a large-scale war being resumed for now.
