The Colombian authorities reported this Tuesday the occurrence of an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 on the Richter scale in the department of Tolima, in the central area of the country, with no victims or significant damage reported for now.

The quake took place at 04:13 in the morning, local time, with a magnitude of 5.6 and "shallow depth," according to the information provided by the Colombian Geological Service.

The agency has located the epicenter in the municipality of Chaparral, a town of about 47,000 inhabitants, where for the moment no material damage or affected people have been confirmed.

For its part, the United States Geological Survey has calculated that the earthquake reached a magnitude of 5.4 and has located the epicenter northwest of Cali.

The preliminary estimates prepared by the U.S. entity regarding possible human and material damage indicate a scenario of limited impact, with a low forecast of victims and losses.
