At least two inmates have lost their lives in a new confrontation recorded in the El Castillo prison, in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, just one day after another fight between prisoners in the same prison resulted in ten fatalities, including a minor who was visiting a relative.
The Secretariat of Public Security has confirmed in a statement that "two persons deprived of liberty" have died as a result of a "brawl" that occurred inside one of the modules of this prison located in the city of Mazatlán.
After the incident, the Interinstitutional Group, made up of the Secretariats of Defense and Navy, the National Guard, and the security bodies of Sinaloa, deployed an operation that, according to the agency, "controlled the situation to provide security to the other people, operational and administrative personnel of said center."
"It is important to note that the rest of the penitentiary population is well and that the authorities maintain their presence inside and outside the center to preserve order and security," state authorities have stated, who have notified what happened to the State Attorney General's Office for the opening of an investigation.
In parallel, the social work area of the prison has contacted the families of the victims to "provide them with the necessary information" about the circumstances of the event.
One day earlier, the same penitentiary had already been the scene of another violent clash between inmates that left at least ten dead and 16 injured, evacuated in ten ambulances escorted by federal forces.
According to the newspaper "El Universal," the gunfire set off alarms outside the prison and prompted the entry of the Police and the specialized prison inspection unit of the National Guard, with support from a Navy helicopter that conducted aerial surveillance.
This same Friday, at a press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her Government is collaborating with the governor of Sinaloa, Graciela Domínguez, "to reinforce the penitentiary system" of the state.
