The authorities of Russia and North Korea held an official event this Monday to launch the first road traffic bridge connecting the two countries, an infrastructure that links their territories over the Tumanaya River and is part of the strengthening of their bilateral relations in recent years.

The prime ministers of Russia and North Korea, Mikhail Mishustin and Pak Thae Song, respectively, kicked off the works in April 2025. The works have already been completed on this one-kilometer-long structure, equipped with two lanes to facilitate the transit of vehicles between both States.

After the inauguration, in which Mishustin participated via videoconference, the Russian government detailed that a new border post has also been built with the capacity to manage around 300 vehicles a day, which will allow "direct road transport" between Russia and North Korea.

"I am convinced that the expansion of border transport infrastructure will give a powerful boost to the development of commercial, economic, scientific, technological, and cultural cooperation between Russia and North Korea," Mishustin emphasized, according to a statement released on social media.

In recent years, Moscow and Pyongyang have reiterated their willingness to deepen their bilateral cooperation, within the framework of the strategic plan signed in 2024, which has generated strong international criticism, particularly due to the tightening of their military ties.

Since the signing of that agreement, North Korea has intensified its support for Russia in the context of the war in Ukraine, including the sending of thousands of troops to the Russian region of Kursk, according to allegations by Ukraine and its Western partners, while both countries have also strengthened their political and diplomatic contacts.
