The President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, has announced this Thursday his resignation from office following the intervention of Banco Ueno, whose serious liquidity crisis has temporarily left millions of clients, including numerous pensioners, unable to access their funds.

Given the moves in Parliament to open him up to impeachment proceedings over his handling of this financial crisis, Peña has opted to leave the Head of State, as he explained, "thinking about the stability of the country, social peace, and the need to preserve democratic institutions".

In his farewell message, the now former head of government addressed the Paraguayan public in an attempt to justify his actions and express his regret for what happened. "I want to ask the people for forgiveness if at any moment I have failed. It was never my intention to betray trust," he said in a video released through his official social media.
