A fire that broke out this early morning in an apartment in the New York district of Brooklyn has caused the deaths of at least six people and has left nine injured, including four police officers, according to what Mayor Zohran Mamdani has confirmed.

The fire has completely destroyed a two-story residential building located near the Sunset Park neighborhood, in an incident that has forced the mobilization of more than 230 firefighters and emergency teams. Mayor Mamdani has asked the public to stay calm until the investigations into what happened are concluded.

"It has been a devastating fire and this neighborhood is going to take a long time to stop crying for its residents," Mamdani said at a press conference, accompanied by Deputy First Commissioner of the city's Fire Department, Daniel Flynn.

Specialists point, for now, to the building's wooden façade, characteristic of the area's architecture, having acted as a powerful fuel. When firefighters arrived at the scene, the flames were already completely consuming the structure.
