South Korea has reported this Wednesday that North Korea fired “several missiles” toward the Sea of Japan, also called the East Sea, without specifying how many projectiles were launched or clarifying whether any of them corresponds to the category of ballistic missile.

The announcement was made by the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff through an official communiqué, in which the launch point is located in “the Seondeok area, South Hamgyong Province,” as the news agency Yonhap has reported.

The military command added that the missiles would not have exceeded a range of 300 kilometers and denied that they are ballistic missiles, while nevertheless leaving open the possibility that the North Korean projectile fired today could correspond to a short-range ballistic missile (CRBM, for its acronym in English).

“South Korea and the United States closely monitored the missile launch from the preparation phase, detecting them and tracking them immediately after their takeoff,” the military body has said, highlighting the “close surveillance” carried out in coordinated form with Washington and the maintenance of “the capacity and readiness necessary to respond decisively to any provocation.”

This new multiple launch denounced by Seoul comes after North Korea’s recent announcement of tests with a cluster bomb and a dispersal warhead, both designed to be integrated into ballistic missiles, after accusing South Korea and the United States of a “brutal demonstration of nuclear war” against it.
