Ten people have lost their lives after the car they were traveling in crashed in the early hours into a lake in Barra Mansa, in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro.

The incident took place in the municipality of Ataulfo de Paiva when the vehicle carrying the ten people on board fell into the water, according to what the Brazilian Military Police has stated.

Among the fatalities are a baby, a girl, two boys, four women and two men, according to the data provided by the authorities, who have still not been able to officially identify the deceased.

A passerby noticed the presence of a submerged car in the lake and raised the alarm, although they could not specify how long the vehicle had been in the water, as the Military Police itself has pointed out.

Members of the Fire Department were able to rescue the ten bodies. Up to 30 service members took part in the operation, including two specialized divers. For the work, seven land vehicles and a boat were also used.

A relative of the victims has indicated that the ten occupants belonged to the same family, residents of the Santa Cruz neighborhood, in Volta Redonda, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, according to what the television network G1 reports.
