The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has urged the future Executive of Israel that emerges from the postelection negotiations to undertake "a change of course" in its current military strategy in the Gaza Strip.

In statements to the press this Wednesday, Turk said: "The message I want to convey is that they do not continue with the current course of the war and stop believing that they are above international law, because I believe that is precisely what we have seen in the current context".

The UN Human Rights chief likewise rejected the criticism accusing the organization of focusing solely on Israel, emphasizing that it has repeatedly condemned the attacks of October 7 and that it remains vigilant over the abuses committed by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). In this regard, he has shown particular concern for reports pointing to extrajudicial executions carried out by Hamas fighters.

Turk has reminded the Israeli authorities that "it has obligations under International Law, International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law, and must respect them".

To conclude, the High Commissioner expressed his desire that the new Israeli Executive "does precisely that and radically changes course".
