King Felipe VI received this afternoon at the Palacio de la Zarzuela the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, who has taken advantage of his official visit to personally thank the monarch for the support that Spain provides to his country in the face of Russian invasion and, at the same time, to convey his condolences to him for the serious railway accident that occurred in Urda (Toledo) on October 28, in which 69 people lost their lives and more than 200 were injured.

At the end of the meeting, which has taken place coinciding with the end of Zelenski’s stay in Madrid as an invitee to the XXX Ibero-American Summit, the Ukrainian president has posted a message on social media in which he has highlighted the tone of the meeting and the content of his conversations with the head of the Spanish State. “Our sympathies are directed to all those affected by this tragedy,” Zelenski explained in that post when referring to the railway incident in Toledo.

During the audience, the Ukrainian president updated the King on “the consequences of Russia’s daily attacks on Ukraine” and detailed the current situation of cooperation between Kiev and its international allies to “strengthen the country’s air defenses and better” protect the population against Russian bombings.

Zelenski has emphasized in his message that “we count on Spain’s support in this regard” and he has also valued “the help it provides” to the Ukrainian people in different areas. The leader has also wanted to highlight the relevance of the monarch’s personal backing, to whom he has expressed his “special gratitude for his personal support,” a gesture that he considers “important” for the citizens of Ukraine in the midst of war.
