The president of the PP and candidate for La Moncloa, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has configured the Madrid candidacy for Congress for the general elections on November 29 by surrounding himself with leaders of maximum trust, deputy secretaries of the party, and several Madrid councilors.
In the elections of July 23, 2023, the PP achieved 16 seats in Madrid and now Feijóo has set his team the goal of improving that benchmark in the general elections in November. "You have the commitment and the obligation to raise two seats in Madrid," he acknowledged he asked Álvarez de Toledo when he informed her that she would be his number two.
Last Thursday, the national leadership of the PP confirmed that the deputy Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo will occupy the second place on the Madrid ballot and that the third position will be for the national spokesperson, Borja Sémper, who was already number three in 2023. From 'Génova' they emphasized then that both embody "different ways of understanding Spain" and that the party accommodates "all sensitivities."
In addition, on Saturday the PP made public that the MEP and deputy secretary of Sectoral Coordination, Alma Ezcurra, responsible for coordinating the electoral program for the general elections, will be number four on the list for Madrid.
Marta Varela and Mar Sánchez, the most trusted collaborators
This Monday, the Popular Party has disseminated the complete list with which it will run for the Lower House for Madrid, which integrates a large part of Feijóo's working core, starting with his two closest collaborators: Marta Varela, chief of staff of the PP leader, and Mar Sánchez, his right hand for three decades. Both were already on the Madrid candidacy in 2023 and are now repeating in positions six and eight.
Feijóo has also strengthened the presence of deputy secretaries on this list. Along with Sémper and Ezcurra, the deputy secretary of Education and Equality, Jaime de los Santos, who will be number five, and the deputy secretary of Economy, Alberto Nadal, who will occupy number nine, are incorporated. The person in charge of International of the PP, Ildefonso Castro, also appears in the Madrid candidacy, in position 11.
The list also includes several mayors from the Community of Madrid, such as Lucía Soledad Fernández, councilor of San Sebastián de los Reyes; Rocío García, mayor of Alcobendas; and Paloma Tejero, mayor of Pozuelo de Alarcón, who are placed in positions 14, 16, and 18, respectively.
Another of the names that Feijóo incorporates is that of María Martín Revuelta, former director of the consulting firm GAD3 and former deputy, who joined a few months ago the team of the general secretary of the PP, Miguel Tellado. On this occasion, she will occupy number 12 for Madrid.
A Madrid councilor and a former councilor in starting positions
The president of the PP has chosen to surround himself with regional councilors and mayors with management experience thinking about a possible government scenario after November 29.
Thus, the until now Madrid councilor for Environment, Agriculture, and Interior, Carlos Novillo, joins the list in seventh place. Paloma Martín, senator in the last legislature and former councilor for Environment, Housing, and Agriculture of the Community of Madrid, is also included.
The Madrid candidacy is completed with other profiles such as José Antonio Sánchez Serrano, until now deputy councilor of the Presidency, and José Enrique Núñez, former deputy councilor of Justice, who are positioned in places 19 and 13, respectively. The former president of the Senate, Pío García Escudero, who runs in number 25, is also listed.
As happened in 2023, the former deputy mayor of Madrid Manuel Cobo, the former president of the Assembly of Madrid María Eugenia Carballedo, and the deputies Pedro Muñoz Abrines, Aurora Nacarino-Brabo, and Edurne Uriarte repeat in the list for Congress, although all of them drop positions. The most significant case is that of Carballedo, who was number four three and a half years ago and now moves to position 24, with few options to revalidate the seat.
Reformismo21 and Nuevas Generaciones, present in the candidacy
The new president of the 'think tank' Reformismo21, Gabriel Elorriaga, who was a senior official with José María Aznar and a deputy with Mariano Rajoy, will repeat in number 21 of the Madrid list, the same position he held in 2023.
Feijóo has also wanted to incorporate the president of Nuevas Generaciones, Ignacio Dancausa, into the candidacy for Madrid to Congress, a gesture with which the 'popular' seek to strengthen their appeal among young voters. Dancausa, who is listed in position 23, took over the direction of the youth organization this summer, replacing the Basque Beatriz Fanjul.
Pedro Rollán returns to lead the Senate list
In the case of the Upper House, the Madrid candidacy will again be headed by the former mayor of Torrejón de Ardoz Pedro Rollán, who has presided over the Senate in this legislature.
After Rollán, Feijóo places Inmaculada Sanz as number two for the Senate in Madrid, current deputy mayor and spokesperson for the Madrid City Council in the council presided over by José Luis Martínez-Almeida.
The third position on the Senate list is occupied by Carlos García Adanero, former leader of Unión del Pueblo Navarro, who has been a deputy for Madrid for the last three and a half years and who now aspires to a seat in the Upper Chamber.
