The until now general secretary of Izquierda Española, Guillermo del Valle, has opted to leave the general secretariat of the formation, a position that Enrique Sanjurjo will occupy, who will assume the leadership of the party in this new phase.
According to what the organization itself has disseminated on its official profiles, Del Valle conveyed his decision to the membership through a letter in which he informed of his resignation from the leadership, although he will continue to be linked to the party as a grassroots member.
In accordance with the provisions of the internal statutes, the National Executive Committee of Izquierda Española has appointed Sanjurjo as the new general secretary. At the same time, it has announced that the spokesperson will be Daniel Meca and that Víctor Gómez Frías joins the National Executive Committee as a member.
The formation has expressed its gratitude to Del Valle for his "commitment, work capacity, and political vision" and has highlighted its "confidence" in the "collective project" that has been consolidating with the contribution of the members.
Izquierda Española, created in 2024 as a social democratic and anti-nationalist party, integrates former members of the PSOE, Ciudadanos, and UPyD, and presented itself for the first time in an election in the European elections of June 9 of that same year.
Del Valle was elected general secretary on June 8, 2025, at the first Congress of Izquierda Española, where he had the support of the former general secretary of UGT Cándido Méndez and the former parliamentary spokesperson for the PSOE Soraya Rodríguez.
