The chargé d'affaires of Spain in Israel, Francisca Pedrós, has been summoned for consultations by the Israeli Foreign Ministry to convey a "reprimand" following the recent statements by the Minister of Childhood and Youth, Sira Rego. For Benjamin Netanyahu's government, these words demonstrate the loss of its "moral compass" on the part of the Spanish government.
The citation of the main Spanish diplomatic representative in Israel —the level of representation remains lowered by decision of both countries— has been carried out by order of the Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar. The measure comes after Rego stated last week that the position of the Spaniards supports "a free Palestine from the river to the sea."
According to what the Israeli Foreign Ministry has denounced in a statement, this slogan implies the disappearance of Israel from the map. For this reason, Pedrós has been received by the head of the Strategic Political Affairs Division, Gilad Cohen, who formally conveyed to her "a reprimand."
"This statement is part of the systematic anti-Israeli policy of the Spanish government and its leader, President Pedro Sánchez," stated the department led by Saar, which recalled that Rego did not condemn the attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023, and that she was banned from entering Israel in September 2025.
"The Spanish government has lost its moral compass. Instead of siding with the fight against terrorism and threats to Israel's security, it has turned the State of Israel into a punching bag for its foreign policy and is actively participating in the campaign against Israel and its mere existence," stated Netanyahu's government, which holds Sánchez responsible for its attacks against Israel "for exercising its fundamental right to defend itself, both against Iran and against Israel."
