The Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) has sent a strong message to the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, regarding the governability situation in Spain. Maribel Vaquero, spokesperson for the PNV in Congress, has asked the head of the Executive not to waste any more time and to take measures "so that the citizens decide at the ballot box", emphasizing that the legislature is exhausted and that the Government "cannot continue to appeal to time as a solution".
In an interview with the program 'Parlamento' on RNE, Vaquero highlighted that the lack of budgets, the approval of important laws by decree-law, and the accumulation of judicial cases for corruption involving the president and the PSOE make it essential to call for general elections immediately. "Time will not improve the situation because this does not heal itself," she stressed.
What does the PSOE say?
According to socialist sources consulted by Demócrata, neither in Ferraz nor in the parliamentary group in Congress is there fear of a frontal rupture with the PNV. They admit that the tone has been raised, but insist that "they do it every Sunday" and "we continue to govern normally in the Basque Country and talk here".
Judicial and political situation
Vaquero appealed directly to the president's responsibility: "You have to take the bull by the horns and not close your eyes to reality". The spokesperson insisted that the social tension that Spain is experiencing indirectly favors parties like Vox, and therefore, it is essential to call elections as soon as possible.
Asked about the possible first sentence of former minister José Luis Ábalos in the 'mask case', Vaquero stated that the PNV will continue to evaluate the situation, but warns that "what it sounds like does not look good". At the same time, she made it clear that the PNV is not negotiating any motion of no confidence with the PP or other political formations.
Regarding the PP's statements blaming the PNV for the situation, Vaquero quipped: "The PP has the ability to make friends and blame others for their own responsibilities". The leader added that the Popular Party is not in a position to give lessons due to the corruption cases affecting them and that their strategy of pressuring the PNV "will not work".
Bildu and the abertzale left
Regarding the positioning of Bildu, Vaquero considers that the abertzale left seeks to prolong the legislature for its own interest, while citizens are aware that the PSOE cannot continue governing “by divine mandate”. According to the PNV spokesperson, citizens' perception of stability and common sense contrasts with the Executive's strategy, which maintains its alignment with figures like José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, indicted in the 'Plus Ultra case'.
The nationalist leader concludes that the decision to call elections is a matter of general interest and political responsibility: “What matters is whether citizens trust what is happening”, emphasizing that the lost time only aggravates the institutional crisis and distrust in the Government.
