The Navy has organized a seminar in Cartagena focused on the protection of underwater infrastructures in the Mediterranean, as part of an event that has brought together specialists, operators from the energy and telecommunications sectors, as well as representatives from organizations related to maritime security.
The sessions, held on October 20 and 21, are part of the activities of the Mediterranean Coast Guard Functions Forum (MEDCGFF), whose annual presidency is held by Spain through the Navy, according to the institution.
The seminar aimed to examine the main threats looming over these facilities, review the applicable legal framework, and exchange procedures and operational capabilities to strengthen their protection.
The program included tours of the Navy's Diving Center and the Mine Countermeasure units, where participants were able to learn firsthand about their infrastructures, resources, and operational capabilities.
Similarly, the technological capabilities of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) were presented, including unmanned underwater vehicles and remotely piloted aircraft systems, as well as the hydrographic and cartographic support capabilities of the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy.
During the sessions, attendees also discussed strategic cooperation initiatives in the Mediterranean and analyzed the capabilities, procedures, and modernization plans of the Navy's Maritime Action Operations and Surveillance Center (COVAM), a key piece for the surveillance and understanding of the maritime environment.
The meeting concluded with an event presided over by the commander of the Maritime Action Command of Cartagena (COMARCART), Captain Julio Fernando Pérez Macías.
