Máximo Quiles will arrive at the Japanese Grand Prix with his first option to be crowned world champion of Moto3. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has extended his lead to 131 points after winning in Austria and taking advantage of the fall of his main rival, David Almansa.
To be champion in Motegi, Quiles needs to finish the weekend with at least 150 points of advantage over his closest rival. That is, he must increase his current margin by 19 points during the Japanese Grand Prix.
What would need to happen in Japan?
The most direct combination would be that Quiles wins the race and that his title rivals do not score enough to prevent the difference from reaching those 150 points. A victory in Moto3 awards 25 points, so the Spaniard would need to gain at least 19 points over the second-placed rider in the championship during the weekend.
However, the scenario also depends on the results of Álvaro Carpe, David Almansa, Brian Uriarte, and Marco Morelli, the riders who can still mathematically delay the championship celebration. Carpe is currently second, 131 points behind Quiles, while Almansa and Uriarte are 132 and 127 points behind, respectively.
The first match point
Quiles already has nine victories in 2026 and has won the last three races held. With seven grand prix still ahead, the Murcian rider will have in Motegi the first opportunity to close a championship that he has dominated for a good part of the season.
