Brian Fariñas has found his first official opportunity with Barcelona in a position different from the one that defines his career. The midfielder was a starter as right-back against Alavés, in a lineup with which Hansi Flick had to respond to the defensive absences.

His debut came in the blaugrana's 6-1 victory. The change of position was one of the new features of the match, along with the move of Frenkie de Jong to the center of defense.

From Benicarló and Villarreal to La Masia

Fariñas was born on February 9, 2006 in Benicarló, Castellón. He arrived at Barcelona in 2018 from Villarreal and joined the infant category.

His progression went through Juvenil A, where he participated in the team that won the League, Cup and UEFA Youth League in the 2024/25 season.

Before that he had made his debut with Barça Atlètic: he did it on March 16, 2024, in a 2-4 victory against Teruel. The path through the reserve team preceded his incorporation into the first team.

Why Flick turned to him for the full-back position

The decision responded to a defensive need and to the coach's confidence in his adaptation. In the pre-match, Flick had explained that the absence of four defenders complicated the preparation of the match.

The coach explicitly pointed to Fariñas as an alternative for the full-back position and highlighted his intelligence and the work carried out during training with the first team.

Therefore, his appearance in that position was not a decision that arose during the match: the coach had already publicly raised that possibility.

A player with a first-team registration and number 4

The debut should also not be confused with a first arrival in Flick's dressing room. The club's official registration indicates that Fariñas began the 2026/27 preseason with the coach and earned a place in the first team with number 4.

In the previous season he had played 35 matches with the reserve team, with five goals and six assists.

The next sporting question will be his continuity: whether this opportunity opens up more minutes at full-back or whether his future involvement returns to midfield. The debut certifies a first response to Flick's needs, without yet resolving what his usual position will be.
