Today, the Princess of Asturias Awards are being presented, recognizing individuals and institutions whose exemplary work has made a significant contribution to the progress of humanity. As I reflect on the journeys and impact of this year’s laureates, I can’t help but notice something they all share: a deep human vision of the world and a common drive to move forward, to innovate, and to find solutions to the great challenges our societies face. Coincidentally  — or perhaps not — today is also International Day Against Climate Change, one of the defining collective challenges of our time. I’d like to share a personal reflection on this defining moment and on how we can turn the climate emergency into a true opportunity for growth, innovation, and progress. #InternationalDayOfClimateAction

Ayer asistí al acto de entrega de los Premios Leones de EL ESPAÑOL, en Madrid. Fue una ceremonia solemne e institucional, pero al mismo tiempo entrañable e inspiradora, como no podía ser de otra manera, al reconocer la labor de una institución tan relevante como la Organización de los Estados Americanos, de la extraordinaria gimnasta acuática Iris Tió, de nuestro querido y mítico piloto de rallies Carlos Sainz, y de Ana Botín, admirable empresaria y presidenta del Banco Santander.   Mi enhorabuena al jurado de los premios por una selección de galardonados tan acertada, y especialmente al diario El Español por su brillante trayectoria, así como a su director, Pedro J. Ramírez, por su constancia, visión y excelencia en el ejercicio del periodismo.

Este verano ha dejado en Europa una cifra difícil de asimilar: más de un millón de hectáreas arrasadas por el fuego. En España, hemos sido el epicentro de la tragedia, con más de 400.000 hectáreas calcinadas.   Estos mega incendios han venido para quedarse y son inextinguibles con los medios habituales. Solo podemos hacer una cosa: prevenirlos. Brief but highly enriching trip to Canada and the United States, where I visited the teams of ACCIONA, ACCIONA Energía and Nordex Group. I come back with a renewed optimistic outlook on what we can achieve in this strategic market. First stop: Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Fruitful meetings with our teams and our main client, the regional government, represented by the Minister of Infrastructure, Kinga Surma, MPP. We gained insight into the scale of the projects underway and the ambitious public investment program planned for the coming years. Second stop: Atlanta, Georgia, US, where I had the chance to witness the progress of our flagship projects: the SR 400 highway and the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Vital projects to reduce congestion in some of the country’s most traffic-challenged metropolitan areas and upgrading of obsolete infrastructures. Our meeting with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), represented by Commissioner Russell R. McMurry, was highly encouraging. North America is indeed a market full of potential with legal certainty; a strong pipeline of infrastructure investment, backed by a culture of public–private collaboration and multiculturalism and hospitality as differentiating values. On top of this, ACCIONA Energía faces tremendous growth opportunities thanks to the accelerating energy transition. The sector’s fundamentals remain clear with rising electricity demand due to electrification and the surge of data centers. Renewables are the most competitive and fastest to deploy alternative while fossil fuel solutions are costlier and slower “time to energy”. Nuclear, even more so. Within this favorable context, Nordex leads the Canadian wind market and is expanding in the US with the restart of turbine manufacturing in Iowa, expected to exceed 2.5 GW of annual capacity. The key challenge is talent. In such a fast-growing environment, finding qualified professionals is one of our greatest hurdles. Building strong partnerships with local companies will be essential to form teams that combine technical expertise and management capabilities, while ensuring alignment with ACCIONA’s culture and standards. I return with a strong conviction that North America will be the key to our long term growth. I encourage everyone within and outside ACCIONA to consider Canada and the United States as rewarding professional destinations, with projects that make a real difference and offer an inspiring, growth-driven environment. Viajar a China siempre me deja una impresión profunda: la magnitud de su desarrollo industrial es muy distinta a la percepción que solemos tener en Europa. Comparto mi reflexión sobre este último viaje en mi primer artículo. ……… Today I’m opening this page on LinkedIn after a few days traveling through China (including Shenzhen, narrowly missing the super typhoon Ragasa that was approaching the coast). Traveling to China always leaves me with a deep impression: the magnitude of its industrial development is very different from the perception we usually have in Europe. Sharing some reflections on my most recent trip in my first LinkedIn article.
