The Ministry of Rural Development, Livestock, Fishing and Food of Cantabria rules out relaxing the current restrictions against contagious nodular dermatosis (CND) on the occasion of the Day of Campoo on September 27, so the presence of the traditional pairs of oxen and cows in the cart parade will not be authorized.
The counselor María Jesús Susinos has reiterated on Televisión Española, in statements collected by Europa Press, that "Animal health must take precedence over a celebration," in response to the request from the PRC of Reinosa for her department to review the current measures.
She has acknowledged that this year the carts of the Day of Campoo will not be able to be pulled by oxen, but she has emphasized that "no exception" will be made, just as none has been made since the first resolution issued on October 20, 2025.
Susinos has called for "broad-mindedness," as, she has emphasized, the sector itself is already demonstrating, whose farmers have "a lot of fear" of this category A disease.
The counselor has warned that if the dermatosis were to enter Cantabria, sanitary voids would have to be applied in the herds and restrictions established within a radius of up to 50 kilometers, with the added risk that "our native breeds could disappear."
She has also recalled that vaccination is not being carried out because the Government of Spain "does not authorize it" and because "there are not enough vaccines" in the European Bank.
Therefore, she has insisted that the regional Executive "does not consider under any circumstances" relaxing the measures, since "we are talking about the health of our livestock and we are talking about the future of our farmers."
The resolution that includes the prevention measures against contagious nodular dermatosis will be in effect until October 30. It will be then that the situation will be reevaluated, unless some news arises beforehand about the possibility of the Government allowing vaccination and a "decision in another direction" can be made.
Susinos has made these statements after signing the contracts of the GAL Asón-Agüera-Trasmiera at the headquarters of the Local Action Group in Ramales.
