The mayor of Mieres, Manuel Ángel Álvarez, has urgently requested a meeting with the Minister of Rural Affairs, Marcelino Marcos Líndez, in order to address the situation generated in Puerto de Pinos, where livestock farmers are now prevented from accessing pastures following an Order from the Court of Instance, Section of Contentious-Administrative Matters no. 1 of Oviedo.
In a statement sent to the media, the mayor has emphasized that the Principality "must help the livestock farmers of Mieres" and get involved in the search for alternatives to "guarantee the use of pastures that, as recognized by all rulings, are the property of the Mieres City Council".
With this objective, Álvarez has conveyed to the minister the need for an immediate meeting to evaluate the problem and propose concrete measures to support the livestock sector of the municipality.
The City Council has already filed an appeal against the resolution issued this very week by the Contentious-Administrative Court no. 1 of Oviedo and emphasizes that, for two years, pasture use concessions have been suspended, in compliance with a previous ruling by the same judicial body.
In this context, the City Council considers the new decision adopted in recent days "surprising," recalling that during these years it has not issued any authorization for the movement or grazing of cattle, nor has it had a Rural Guard service, thus complying with the judicial ruling of February 2024.
The municipal Government team has expressed its "perplexity" at the resolution dated May 27 that requires the City Council "to do something over which it has no jurisdiction." "Mieres has complied with all judicial rulings and has been working for years to normalize the situation in Pinos and regrets that some sectors only seek to fuel sterile controversies to wave the flag of confrontation and conflict around the port of Pinos," the mayor stated.
For its part, the agricultural organization COAG has also expressed its displeasure with the judicial decision, recalling that Puerto de Pinos "is a property of the Mieres City Council acquired for the livestock farmers of this municipality in 1926." It is, they emphasize, "a property ultimately belonging to all the residents of Mieres who, with their taxes, contribute to its conservation and maintenance."
From COAG they insist that "we cannot tolerate that a entrenched political conflict with León that has been judicially resolved in the last instance and to which we farmers are alien, prevents our livestock from accessing pastures in the summer that the farmers of Mieres have been using for 100 years".
