Catalonia will face this Wednesday, September 9, a day marked by intense rain, strong winds, and maritime storm. The Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) maintains warnings in a large part of the territory and contemplates precipitation that, locally, can leave up to 40 liters per square meter in just 30 minutes.

The episode of instability expected for this Wednesday will affect practically all of Catalonia, with the exception of some areas of the Alt Pirineu, Lleida, and Terres de l'Ebre, according to the latest update from Meteocat.

The main risk will be in the precipitation. The showers can be intense and accompanied by storms, with the possibility of violent weather phenomena in some points.

Very high danger during the morning

Meteocat places the most adverse scenario during the morning in the regions of Baix Llobregat, Vallès Occidental, Garraf, Alt Penedès, and Baix Penedès.

In these areas, the storms can locally leave 40 liters per square meter in half an hour, a volume capable of causing rapid water accumulation in streets, underpasses, and other vulnerable points.

The warning thus affects densely populated areas around Barcelona and part of the coastline and pre-coast of Tarragona.

Gusts of more than 108 kilometers per hour

The rain will not be the only adverse phenomenon.

In the Alt Empordà, Meteocat contemplates gusts of wind that can locally exceed 108 kilometers per hour, with a moderate danger level.

The intensity of the wind can complicate circulation and especially affect exposed areas, trees, urban furniture, and outdoor activities.

Waves of more than 2.5 meters in Girona

The storm will also reach the sea.

The coast of the Alt Empordà and Baix Empordà may register waves exceeding 2.5 meters, also under a moderate danger warning.

The forecast advises special attention in promenades, breakwaters, and areas close to the coast, where the swell can reach areas usually passable.

A Wednesday marked by instability

The warnings are mainly concentrated on Wednesday, although the exact evolution of the storms will depend on how the episode moves during the next few hours.

Meteocat keeps its warning map updated for September 9, with levels ranging from moderate risk to very high danger depending on the region and meteorological phenomenon.
