The seismic activity registered in the vicinity of Ceuta and the Alboran Sea has left several low-magnitude movements detected during the last few hours by the National Geographic Institute (IGN), with no personal or material damage reported at the moment caused by this earthquake in Ceuta.

The earthquake of greatest intensity registered so far reached a magnitude of 3.1 and was located this Wednesday at 08:21 hours in the vicinity of Restinga, in northern Morocco, near Ceuta, according to data published by the IGN.

In addition to that movement, the official body has registered other small earthquakes in the vicinity of the autonomous city during Tuesday and early Wednesday morning.

Among them are:

  • An earthquake of magnitude 2.4 east of Ceuta.
  • Another of magnitude 2.0 to the northwest.
  • A third of magnitude 1.9 northeast of the city.

The IGN does not report damage or special alerts

For the moment, the authorities have not reported any incidents related to this earthquake in Ceuta, nor have any special Civil Protection alerts been activated. The Strait of Gibraltar and Alboran Sea area registers relatively frequent seismic activity due to the interaction between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates.

In recent months, other perceptible earthquakes had already been detected in different parts of southern Spain and northern Morocco. The National Geographic Institute keeps the official record of earthquakes detected in Spanish territory and nearby areas updated in real time.
