The spokesperson for the Municipal Socialist Group in Seville, Antonio Muñoz, has lashed out this Wednesday the 8th at the "inefficiency and clumsiness" of the Sevillian City Council, which he blames for being "incapable of installing the awnings on the Avenida de la Constitución after two years."

As the party explained in a statement, after the termination of the contract with the awarded company, the local government has announced that this summer "only a pilot test will be carried out on a single section of the street, which will once again leave the city's main artery without the promised shade." "After two years of beating around the bush, the Avenida de la Constitución will not have awnings," Muñoz insisted.

In this context, the City Council detailed last Tuesday the 7th that a first section of the awning system will be installed on the Avenida de la Constitución once the Junta de Andalucía authorizes the project, and that it will serve as a test prior to the installation of the rest of the system.

Urbanism has developed a new awning design for this main street, of which two alternatives have been submitted to the Heritage Commission, the body that will have to decide which of the proposals best fits this protected environment.

However, Muñoz has questioned the mayor's attitude, accusing him of "constantly diverting responsibility." "They always look for a culprit, be it heritage, the Junta de Andalucía, the buildings, the neighbors, but the plain truth is that they don't find the solution."

For the socialist spokesperson, what has happened constitutes "clear proof" and a "sample" of a municipal government "that doesn't know what to do with Seville, that improvises and is continuously looking for solutions that cannot then be implemented."

In the same vein, Muñoz has censured the economic impact of this management, stating that "there is a lack of programming and a budget that has been thrown away due to the government's inefficiency." He recalls that this "lack of foresight was already revealed" last summer, when the awnings "arrived at the end of August and only provided shade for the tram at a cost of 300,000 euros."

Furthermore, the socialist party recalled that in 2026 the mayor "blamed the Provincial Heritage Commission for the delays," a version that was denied by his party colleague, the Minister of Culture Patricia del Pozo, when she explained that the City Council "did not deliver the definitive project until the beginning of June."

From the PSOE they underline that the "disastrous management" of the awning is not confined to the Avenida de la Constitución. The socialists "point out identical delays in the Puente de San Telmo and the total absence of awnings in streets where they had been announced for this summer", such as Córdoba or Alfonso XII, as well as in traditional spots like the Plaza del Pan.

"It is true that the city needs more shade, especially more trees and more fountains so that we can better withstand the heat," Muñoz concluded, emphasizing that the situation on the Avenue "is the reflection of a mayor who lacks a serious project for the city."
