American Airlines plans to launch on May 27, 2027, a daily direct connection between Charlotte Douglas International Airport (North Carolina) and Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. This new transatlantic route will be operated with Boeing 777-200ER aircraft.
With this new link, Charlotte will become the sixth 'gateway' or major entry point for the airline in the United States with a direct flight to the Catalan capital, consolidating American Airlines as the American company with the largest service offering to Barcelona.
The launch of this route is part of the international growth plan announced by the company for the summer season of 2027, which includes seven new transoceanic connections and the addition of three additional global destinations to its network.
All these new summer flights will have a daily frequency, and tickets will be available for purchase starting August 31.
Expansion in Europe and Asia
The rollout of this program will begin on March 19, 2027, with the opening of the Chicago-Tokyo Narita route, which will be served by a Boeing 787-9.
On March 28, the new connections New York JFK-Amsterdam and Philadelphia-Porto will be added, both operated with the latest generation Airbus A321XLR.
Philadelphia will strengthen its role as one of the main hubs of American Airlines for the European market by adding flights to Vienna (starting May 6) and Reykjavik (starting May 27).
The connection with the Austrian capital will remain active until early January 2028, aiming to meet the strong demand linked to the Christmas markets.
On the other hand, New York JFK will add a new direct link to Nice (France) on May 6.
As part of this package of news, the airline will also restore a fourth daily frequency between New York JFK and London Heathrow with Boeing 787-9, and will advance the start of the seasonal operation of the Charlotte-Paris and Miami-Milan routes to March 4 to adapt to the increase in travel in spring.
