The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) has called on companies to complete the registration of their aliases as soon as possible and to respond to the communications from the agency before September 15, in order to prevent interruptions in the sending of SMS messages, MMS (multimedia messages) or RCS (another type of messages) to their customers.
Starting that day, electronic communications operators must block messages that use aliases not listed in the CNMC Alias Registry, as well as those sent by operators that are not registered, in application of Ministerial Order TDF/149/2025 of February 12.
This measure is part of the Government's Anti-Fraud Plan, aimed at strengthening the protection of electronic communications and preventing identity theft and fraud using recognized brands.
The obligation applies to any public or private entity that uses alphanumeric identifiers —such as its corporate name, trade name, brand, or web domain— instead of a phone number to send delivery notices, appointment reminders, or commercial communications.
Among the most impacted sectors are banks, retailers, insurers, transportation companies, and public administrations. Organizations that do not register their aliases will not be able to display their brand as an identifier, although they will still have the option to send messages to their customers without that alias.
The CNMC has requested companies to carry out the procedure with sufficient margin and to address any pending notifications, emphasizing that communications can continue to be sent without aliases and that new registrations can be managed at any time after September 15.
The registration procedure, as well as the format and linking requirements, are defined in Circular 1/2026 of the CNMC of March 18.
