The Government estimates that the Insurance Compensation Consortium (CCS) will end up paying more than 100 million euros in compensation for the damages caused by the earthquakes recorded in Granada since last August 14. The first compensations have begun to be paid this Wednesday and the forecast is that 90% of the payments will be completed during the next three or four months, according to sources from the Government consulted by Demócrata.
The estimate may continue to grow. The Consortium has received so far 27,451 applications for material damages, initially valued at almost 72 million euros, but is working with a scenario in which the final number of files may reach 60,000. Currently, about 2,000 new requests are coming in daily, according to data provided to DEMÓCRATA.
The first vice president and minister of Economy, Trade and Business, Carlos Cuerpo, traveled this Wednesday to Granada to meet with 18 mayors of the most affected municipalities and with neighborhood representatives. The official agenda of the Government confirms both meetings, held at the Government Subdelegation and with the Zaidín Vergeles Neighborhood Association.
Homes concentrate 95% of the damages
The bulk of the files corresponds to individuals. Homes and homeowners' associations accumulate 25,797 applications and damages estimated at 65.46 million euros, around 95% of all the claims recorded so far.
More than half of these files are concentrated in the metropolitan area of Granada.
Far behind are businesses, warehouses, and other risks, with 1,241 applications and damages estimated at 5.3 million euros. Offices account for 304 files for 844,842 euros and industries, another 71 for 235,649 euros.
The reported damages on vehicles are, for the moment, much lower: 36 files and 91,764 euros. There are also two applications corresponding to civil works, valued at 55,752 euros.
In total, the Consortium counts 27,451 files and 71,983,686 euros in estimated damages.
Up to 60,000 applications and more than 100 million
The definitive dimension of the disaster is still not closed. The rate of incoming files leads the CCS to estimate that around 60,000 applications could end up being submitted, more than double the number registered until this Wednesday.
If that forecast is fulfilled, the agency calculates that the compensations will exceed 100 million euros.
The figure multiplies the cost of the seismic swarm that Granada suffered in 2021 by a wide margin. Cuerpo has recalled that at that time the Consortium received about 13,000 applications and ended up paying 17 million euros.
The comparison shows the economic magnitude of the succession of earthquakes that began on August 14: with the files submitted so far, the damage estimate already exceeds four times the amount finally compensated in 2021.
The Consortium mobilizes up to 250 experts
The accumulation of tens of thousands of files has forced the public body dependent on the Ministry of Economy to reinforce its device.
The CCS has initially mobilized 146 specialized experts to inspect and assess the damages, but plans to expand the team to 250 professionals in the coming days.
All applications received by this Wednesday already have an expert assigned, according to data provided by the Government to Demócrata.
The Consortium has also reinforced its telephone and telematic channels and has adopted extraordinary measures for administrative simplification to accelerate processing. The body has maintained specific information for those affected by the succession of earthquakes in the metropolitan area of Granada since last week.
The first compensations have begun to be paid this Wednesday, August 26, twelve days after the start of the succession of earthquakes. The goal of the body is to have made 90% of the payments within a period of three to four months.
The Government will declare the area severely affected
Cuerpo has also communicated to the mayors that the Government will approve the declaration of an area severely affected by a civil protection emergency.
This declaration is independent of the compensations from the Consortium. The CCS covers extraordinary damages —including earthquakes— on goods and people that meet the corresponding insurance conditions, while the declaration of a severely affected area allows the Government to activate other public measures provided for this type of emergencies.
Therefore, the compensations from the Consortium are not a general public aid of up to 100 million for all those affected. They are compensations linked to the insurance system and to the damages covered by the CCS.
The dimension of this organism in major disasters can be considerable. After the DANA of 2024, for example, the Consortium had paid at the beginning of July 2026 more than 4.524 million euros corresponding to about 250,000 requests already processed.
How to report damages to the Consortium
The affected individuals who have the corresponding coverage can report their damages directly to the Insurance Compensation Consortium.
The organism has enabled the phone 900 222 665 and allows requests to be processed through its electronic headquarters. The insured can also contact their own companies so that they manage the communication with the Consortium.
It is not necessary to wait for the Government to declare the area severely affected to claim from the CCS. The compensation for the insured damages caused by the earthquake operates through a different channel than the aids that may be approved later.
