Three out of every four Andalusians believe that María Jesús Montero should leave her party positions after the PSOE's result in the Andalusian elections of March 17, according to a survey by SocioMétrica for El Español.

The poll places the percentage of Andalusian citizens who believe Montero should resign from her role as leader of the Andalusian PSOE and deputy general secretary of the party at 76%. Only 17.5% support her continuing in her party responsibilities.

One in three socialist voters also calls for changes

The most relevant data from the survey is within the socialist electorate itself. According to SocioMétrica, one in three PSOE voters believes Montero should leave her positions after the result obtained in Andalusia.

The majority of socialist voters, 60%, support her continuing, but the critical percentage within her own political sphere reflects the internal debate opened after March 17.

Montero obtained 28 seats, below Espadas' result

The survey comes after the Andalusian PSOE won 28 seats in the regional elections, below the 30 deputies Juan Espadas obtained in 2022.

That result has become the worst historical record for the PSOE in Andalusia and has reopened the debate about the party's political leadership in the community.

Spain as a whole also leans towards resignation

Beyond Andalusia, the poll indicates that 64% of Spaniards believe that Montero should leave her party positions. Conversely, 26.7% believe she should continue leading the Andalusian PSOE.

The difference between these two figures shows that the pressure on the socialist leader is more intense in Andalusia, where the electoral result has a more direct interpretation.

Left-wing voters are the most favorable to her staying

The survey also shows relevant differences based on voting recall. Voters for Sumar and Podemos are the most in favor of Montero continuing in her positions, with percentages of 66% and 70%, respectively.

Among PSOE voters, support for her continuity drops to 60%. However, among PP and Vox voters, more than eight out of ten believe she should leave her party responsibilities.

Young people are the most critical

By ages, young people appear among the most critical groups with Montero. According to SocioMétrica, 70.7% of those under 35 believe she should leave her positions after the electoral result. This data reinforces the idea that the debate about succession is not limited to the internal sphere of the PSOE, but also appears in the general perception of voters.

Internal debate in the Andalusian PSOE

After the electoral result, voices have emerged within Andalusian socialism calling for reflection on the future of the party in the community. The debate revolves around whether the PSOE should maintain the current leadership or open a new chapter after several electoral cycles of decline. Montero has defended that the party must analyze the results and learn from what the voters have expressed at the polls and reiterated that she will remain at its head to prepare it for the next municipal elections.
