EH Bildu has presented in the Basque Parliament a formal request for information in which it demands the regional government explanations about the origin of the fire registered on the past day 21 in the Port of Pasaia (Gipuzkoa), as well as about the possible "shortcomings" in the management of this event.
In the document, processed this Tuesday in the Basque Chamber and collected by Europa Press, the coalition urges the Executive to specify whether any official investigation has been launched regarding this fire and at what stage it is.
Likewise, the parliamentarian Ander Goikoetxea requests specific data on how the fire started and what type of materials were stored in the area where the flames began. Goikoetxea also asks the Government to detail whether at any time any "risk" to the health of the population was detected.
On the other hand, it demands information about the substances analyzed regarding particles, heavy metals, and other possible contaminants that could have been generated by burning cars and batteries, as well as about the results of air quality measurements during the development of the fire.
The representative of EH Bildu also requires that the Executive clarify "why it was decided to confine the population of Lezo and its surroundings and according to what criteria this decision was made." Similarly, he asks for details on the protocol and communication channels established between the Basque Government, the Port Authority of Pasaia, and the municipalities of this locality and Lezo, as well as the "shortcomings that have been identified" in that procedure.
Inspections and future measures
EH Bildu also requests information on how many inspections have been carried out in recent years in the facility affected by the fire and about the authorizations and environmental conditions that regulate the scrap management activity in which the fire originated.
In the same initiative, the abertzale coalition asks the Basque Government to specify "what measures it will adopt from now on to prevent similar events in the port of Pasaia and minimize the risk to the health of the population in case they occur."
