The Plenary of Congress will submit to a vote next week a motion from the BNG that proposes Spain's withdrawal from NATO and its dissolution, as well as the denunciation of agreements that allow the United States Army to use the military bases of Morón and Rota, in order to prevent the presence of American forces on Spanish territory.
In April, the Lower House already rejected, with the votes of PP, PSOE, Vox, PNV, Junts, and UPN, a similar initiative presented by Podemos that proposed convening a referendum on Spain's eventual withdrawal from NATO and called for an end to all US military activity and presence in the country.
According to the motion resulting from the interpellation registered by the BNG and collected by Europa Press, the nationalist party demands that the Government reverse the decisions adopted in the last two years that have led to an increase in military spending and discard new expansions, redirecting those resources to social policies, the strengthening of public services, and priority public investments.
The text also calls for opposition to the cut of more than 20% foreseen in the European Union's Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-2034 for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and of more than 60% in the fishing sector, cuts that are proposed to allocate those funds to defense spending and the purchase of armaments within the REARM EUROPA program.
In line with this position, the motion urges the Executive to reject wars and aggressions of an imperialist nature and to opt for the path of dialogue and negotiation as tools for peace, with the aim of fostering a scenario of stability and good neighborly relations both in Europe and globally.
ACCUSES THE GOVERNMENT OF AN "ARMS RACE"
In its explanatory statement, the BNG maintains that the Government, despite presenting itself as "the most progressive in history," has been engaged for years in an "arms race dictated by" the United States and through NATO, which would involve allocating "huge amounts of money" to military spending.
The party emphasizes that this increase occurs in a context in which, in its opinion, it is "more necessary than ever" to strengthen social protection policies and economic development. It also asserts that this is, "by far," the Executive that has most increased military spending in Spain in recent decades.
The motion warns that this "race" of Defense spending is projected over the coming years, after the Council of Ministers approved in June 2025 the authorization to modify limits and assume spending commitments charged to future exercises, which allows the Ministry of Defense to finance twelve new special modernization programs included in the Industrial and Technological Plan for Security and Defense.
To this are added the resources directed to Ukraine "at the mandate of the United States". The BNG mentions allocations of 1,000 million euros approved in May 2024, February 2025, and March 2026, in addition to the shipment of weaponry.
