The Parliament of Galicia held a specific session this Wednesday to raise public awareness about the importance of early detection of melanoma, one of the most aggressive skin cancers.

During the session, deputies, parliamentary staff, and media professionals were able to undergo a dermatological examination as part of a secondary prevention program for melanoma. In addition, they received practical advice on primary prevention of this type of skin cancer, with special emphasis on photoprotection, described as "the main protection tool against the vast majority of skin cancers."

The organization of the session was led by Dr. María Ángeles Flórez Menéndez, head of the Medical-Surgical Dermatology and Venereology Service at the Santiago University Clinical Hospital (CHUS), who coordinated the various activities carried out in the autonomous Chamber.

This action is part of the Euromelanoma campaign, promoted by a network of European dermatologists. The initiative started in Belgium in 1999 and is supported, among other scientific societies, by the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, as well as its autonomous and regional sections.

Currently, Euromelanoma is carried out in forty countries with the aim of promoting prevention, early diagnosis, and therapeutic management of skin cancer. The program includes activities aimed at the general public, the scientific community, and those with responsibilities in political decision-making.
