The president of the Official College of Physicians (OMC), Tomás Cobo, has held a working meeting with officials from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities with the aim of analyzing the current system for homologating medical degrees in Spain and studying possible improvements that reinforce the quality and safety of healthcare.
This meeting is in addition to the line of collaboration recently initiated with the Ministry of Health, in which the corporation already expressed its concern about the high number of homologations planned for 2025 - more than 30,000 medical degrees - and about the urgency of evolving towards a model that fully ensures the clinical competencies of those who practice.
During the meeting, representatives of the medical profession were informed that the new Royal Decree on the recognition and academic and professional verification of foreign university degrees, currently being processed, will incorporate reinforcements in the area of competencies and knowledge required of non-EU professionals who apply to homologate their degrees in Spain.
Likewise, it was specified that the text will maintain the mandatory nature of the report from professional colleges in the homologation procedures, in order to verify essential aspects related to professional practice. As a conclusion, both parties agreed to maintain an open channel of stable collaboration to continue advancing in a coordinated manner in this area and scheduled a new joint meeting with the Ministry of Health in the coming weeks.
