The Social Affairs Committee of the Parliament has given the green light to a proposal that urges the Government to get involved in the activities of the International Year of Volunteers through promotion, training, and awareness initiatives aimed at citizens.
As reported by the Parliament, the deputies of the Committee have supported by assent this non-binding proposal (PNL) presented by the PP and defended by deputy Pedro Álvarez.
The proposal also calls on the Ministry of Families, Social Welfare, and Dependency Care to work in coordination with third-sector entities and the Balearic Islands Volunteer Platform in the design and execution of specific training actions.
Likewise, among other aspects, the initiative proposes updating the census of entities that carry out volunteer work in the Islands, adopting administrative simplification measures to facilitate their work, and strengthening the human and technical resources dedicated to the management of the Registry of Associations and Entities.
Support for the Sahrawi people
In the same session, the Social Affairs Committee also approved by assent another PNL presented jointly by all groups represented in the Parliament, except Vox, focused on the recognition and support for the Sahrawi people.
Through this initiative, the Chamber reaffirms that Western Sahara is a non-self-governing territory subject to international law "over which the Kingdom of Morocco has never had sovereignty" and calls for "the cessation of the illegal occupation."
The text also demands from the Kingdom of Morocco "the release of political prisoners and an end to human rights violations in the prisons it controls"; and requests the United Nations "to discard any proposal that contemplates the partition of Western Sahara."
The deputies express their support for the political process underway under the direction of the United Nations, with the aim of achieving "a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution that guarantees the right to self-determination of the Sahrawi people."
Among other points, the PNL urges public institutions of the State to maintain and increase solidarity support and humanitarian aid, both to the refugee population in the Tindouf camps and to the Sahrawis residing in the occupied territories.
