An Israeli court has decided this Wednesday to acquit Yon Schreiber of the crime of assault, the man who in April hit a French nun and a man who tried to help her in Jerusalem, considering that he suffers from mental health issues.
The Magistrate's Court of Jerusalem has concluded that Schreiber, 36 years old and a resident of a settlement in the West Bank, cannot be considered "criminally responsible" for what happened due to his "mental state" at that time.
Judge Ophir Tischler has determined that this Israeli citizen carried out the assaults, but has accepted the opinion of the district psychiatrist, who describes a "psychotic" state and a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Therefore, instead of prison, he has ordered his internment in a psychiatric hospital for a maximum of six years, according to the 'Jerusalem Post'.
The Israeli Prosecutor's Office had accused Schreiber in May of a crime of assault with the aggravating factor of religious hatred and had requested six years in prison for the beating of the French nun near the Cenacle, on Mount Zion in Jerusalem.
According to the recordings from the security cameras, released by the Israeli Police itself, the settler ran up to the nun, pushed her from behind, and threw her to the ground, then kicked her and attacked another person who tried to stop the assault.
