Donald Trump was evacuated this Saturday night from the White House Correspondents' Dinner after shots were heard at the Washington Hilton, the hotel where one of the most symbolic events between the press and political power in the United States was being held. The US president, the first lady, Melania Trump, and several members of the Administration were removed from the premises by the Secret Service amid a scene of confusion, sirens, and a heavy police presence.

The Secret Service confirmed that Trump and the first lady were safe and that one person had been detained following the armed incident. Authorities are keeping the investigation open into what happened in the access and security control area of the hotel, where the shooting occurred.

A shooting during dinner among journalists, politicians, and high-ranking officials

The White House Correspondents' Dinner had just kicked off when the event was abruptly interrupted. Inside the ballroom were journalists, politicians, guests from the cultural world, and high-ranking officials of the US Government. The night, traditionally conceived as a mix of institutional gala, political satire, and tribute to freedom of the press, transformed in a matter of seconds into a security operation.

The shots were heard near the main access control area. According to Reuters, the incident occurred when an armed man tried to cross or approach the security zone. The suspect was subdued and detained shortly after by security forces.

Trump was evacuated along with Melania Trump and other members of his team. High-ranking officials from the Administration were also removed from the premises, while some of the attendees took refuge under tables or tried to leave the room following security instructions.

The suspect, arrested

The identity of the suspect was not immediately released by authorities. Initial reports point to a man in his 30s from California, although the investigation remains open and official data has been released cautiously.

Trump affirmed later that the detainee was carrying “several weapons” and that, according to initial indications, he might have acted alone. The president avoided completely closing that hypothesis and left the final conclusion in the hands of the investigators.

The White House and security forces insisted that the president, the first lady, the vice president, and Cabinet members were out of danger. Authorities also reported that an agent was hit by a shot, although his bulletproof vest prevented serious injuries, according to initial official communications reported by several US media outlets.

Trump appears after evacuation

After leaving the hotel, Trump reappeared with a message on Truth Social and later with a press conference from the White House. The president praised the performance of the Secret Service and law enforcement, to whom he attributed a quick response during the shooting.

In his message, Trump assured that the “shooter” had been detained and that he had recommended that “the show go on,” although he added that he would be guided by the indications of the security forces. Finally, those responsible for the operation asked to evacuate the event and the dinner was canceled.

The president also pointed out that the White House Correspondents' Association could reschedule the dinner in the next 30 days. Before the incident, Trump was scheduled to give a speech to the attendees, in what was his first appearance as president at an event he had boycotted for years.

The night the press and power ended up under protection

The White House Correspondents' Dinner is one of Washington's most recognizable rituals. It brings together journalists, political leaders, advisors, diplomats, and celebrities each year for a ceremony that champions the First Amendment and freedom of the press, although it also serves as a thermometer of the relationship between the White House and the media.

Trump's presence had a special political charge. Throughout his public career, the president has maintained a permanent clash with a good part of the major US media, which he has repeatedly accused of hostility and manipulation. That is why his attendance at this year's dinner had a symbolic component: Trump's return to a stage that for years represented, for him, the heart of Washington's media establishment.

That framework turned the shooting into something more than a security incident. The image of Trump being evacuated from a gala dedicated to the press, surrounded by Secret Service agents, condenses the political tension of a country in which violence against public figures has become a growing concern.

The third major episode of political violence around Trump

The incident comes after two previous episodes of extreme seriousness during the 2024 presidential campaign. The first occurred at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Trump was wounded in the ear by a gunshot. The second took place in Florida, when an armed man was detected near a golf course where the then-Republican candidate was.

The new evacuation in Washington inevitably reopens the debate on presidential security, political radicalization, and the climate of threat surrounding American public life. Although authorities still need to clarify the suspect's motive, the fact that the shooting occurred at an event with the president, the first lady, and part of the Cabinet present raises the political gravity of the case.

The United States thus returns to a familiar and disturbing scene: a president whisked away at full speed, a suspect detained, a hotel cordoned off, and the federal capital turned into a maximum alert perimeter for a few hours.

The ghost of Reagan in the same hotel

The scene of the shooting adds a historical layer that is difficult to ignore. The Washington Hilton is the same hotel where Ronald Reagan suffered an assassination attempt on March 30, 1981, when John Hinckley Jr. shot at the then-president as he was leaving an event. Reagan survived thanks to the quick action of the Secret Service and the medical team that attended to him.

The coincidence of the scenario amplified the impression of political déjà vu. More than four decades later, another Republican president was evacuated from the same hotel amid an armed attack, with agents deployed, assistants in panic, and an entire city focused on the safety of the head of state.

The White House initially avoided raising the tone beyond confirming that Trump was safe and that the suspect had been arrested. But the symbolism of the place, added to the recent history of threats against the president, makes the episode one of the most delicate moments of his second term.

Dinner is canceled and will be rescheduled

The White House Correspondents' Association initially tried to maintain the event, but ended up accepting the recommendation of the security services. The association's president, Weijia Jiang, informed attendees that the dinner was suspended and that Trump would appear from the White House.

The event was supposed to bring together about 2,600 guests, according to information disseminated by US media. The evacuation generated scenes of uncertainty inside and outside the hotel, with attendees leaving the premises, police deployed at the entrances, and helicopters flying over the area.

The organization now plans to look for a new date. But even if the dinner is rescheduled, the night has already been marked as one of the most tense in the recent history of the event.
