A flash flood hit this Wednesday, August 26, the border region between Nepal and Tibet, leaving at least nine dead and numerous missing. The rise has caused enormous destruction in the Nepalese district of Rasuwa, where water has swept away homes, roads, bridges, and hydroelectric facilities. Authorities have activated search operations and have urged the population located downstream to move to safe places.

Among the most affected areas are Syabrubesi and Timure, in northern Nepal. The magnitude of the rise has hindered access for emergency services, and the overflowing river has even prevented helicopters from landing in some areas. Authorities fear that the number of victims will increase as the search progresses.

The exact cause of the disaster is still under investigation. A preliminary scientific assessment suggests that a landslide may have blocked the Lhende River and generated a buildup of water that ended up being released violently, although the possible intervention of a glacial lake is also being studied. Other international reports indicate an avalanche of ice and rock as a possible trigger.

A flood sweeps through towns in northern Nepal

The rise has advanced through the Bhote Koshi system, one of the waterways that cross this mountainous region from Tibet to Nepal. The current has hit settlements and infrastructure in Rasuwa and subsequently caused damage in areas located downstream.

The destruction has also affected communications. A 42-kilometer road connecting Betrawati, in Nuwakot, with the border crossing of Rasuwagadhi has been swept away by the floods, further complicating land access to the affected areas.

The Nepalese government has mobilized security forces, medical personnel, and rescue resources. Authorities are also evacuating communities located downstream due to the risk that the flow will continue to cause damage in the coming hours.

Numerous missing and race against time for rescues

The exact number of missing persons remains uncertain. Associated Press reports hundreds of missing, while other sources handle lower and still provisional balances. This difference forces caution in treating any specific figure while localization efforts continue.

Among the people whose whereabouts are unknown, there are also foreign citizens. South Korea has reported that eight South Korean workers from a hydropower project are missing, while another ten remain isolated waiting to be evacuated.

The difficulties in accessing certain areas still prevent a complete picture of the disaster. The priority of the deployed services is to reach the isolated communities, locate survivors, and move those who remain near the waterways to safe places.

A ice avalanche, among the investigated hypotheses

The origin of the flood is one of the elements on which there is still uncertainty. Nepali scientists have conducted an initial assessment according to which an avalanche may have blocked the Lhende, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi, temporarily forming a natural barrier. Its subsequent collapse could explain the enormous amount of water released suddenly.

Researchers are also studying whether the draining of a glacial lake could have occurred. The initial observations do not yet allow for a definitive establishment of what sequence of phenomena caused the flooding, so the authorities are keeping different possibilities open.

This caution is particularly important because Nepal suffered another catastrophic flood in July 2025 in the Bhote Koshi. On that occasion, subsequent investigations determined that the episode had been caused by the sudden drainage of a glacial lake located in Tibet.

Roads, bridges, and hydropower plants destroyed

Beyond the victims, the floods have caused significant damage to the infrastructure in northern Nepal. Roads, bridges, homes, and energy projects have been destroyed or severely affected, leaving some communities practically cut off.

The impact on the electrical system is also considerable. Reuters estimates that around 430 megawatts of hydropower capacity is affected, equivalent to more than 12% of Nepal's hydropower capacity.

The emergency does not end at the border. In Tibet, Gyirong County has suffered landslides and damage to roads, communications, and electricity supply. Chinese authorities have reinforced search and rescue operations in the face of a disaster that affects both sides of the Himalayas.

A region especially vulnerable to sudden floods

The new catastrophe occurs just over a year after the severe flooding recorded in the same border area. The succession of episodes again highlights the risks associated with glaciers, high mountain lakes, and landslides in the Himalayas.

The extreme relief means that a sudden release of large amounts of water can quickly travel through the valleys and reach settlements and infrastructures located next to the rivers. In the case of this Wednesday, the destruction of the road and energy system shows to what extent these phenomena can trigger consequences far beyond the place where they originate.

For now, rescue operations continue and the balance must be considered provisional. Reuters confirms at least nine fatalities between Nepal and Tibet, while the deployed teams attempt to determine how many people remain missing and scientists work to accurately establish what triggered the flood.
