Finland has called this Friday the ambassador of Russia to formally convey its protest over the alleged incursion of a Russian military aircraft into its airspace, which occurred in the afternoon of August 20 over the western area of the Gulf of Finland.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned today the ambassador of Russia to the ministry and presented a request for clarification regarding the alleged violation of airspace," the Finnish diplomacy has pointed out in a statement released on social media.

The authorities of Helsinki had already reported on Thursday this possible violation of their borders and activated an investigation led by the Ministry of Defense. "Any alleged territorial violation is taken very seriously. An investigation has been initiated," emphasized the Minister of Defense, Antti Hakkanen, in a brief note in which it is specified that the Finnish Border Guard has begun the inquiries and "will provide more information" when new data is available.

In recent months, various European states have reported the entry of drones across their borders in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
